Walking to Burn Calories
By Mike Mccaw
Walking to lose weight has become a popular strategy for people of all ages, but if you’re like many people you may have a few questions about the actual calories burned walking and how this gets you closer to your weight loss goal. For example, when it comes to calories burned walking – how long do you have to walk to lose weight? It’s not uncommon for doctors to recommend walking as the one best way to help you lose weight, especially if exercising isn’t your thing – and for those extremely overweight walking is one exercise that doesn’t put too much pressure on your bones and joints. Many people just like you are wondering how long and how fast you need to walk for in order to lose weight. Calories burned walking and weight – what is the relationship exactly? But first, you need to understand how your weight and calories relate. One pound of body fat equals 3500 calories. So if you wanted to lose one pound each week, then you would need to burn 3500 more calories each week more than you eat. Simple enough, right? To burn these additional calories, you can either reduce your calorie intake, or step up your activity level. What’s important when you decide to take up walking to help you lose weight is that you start off slow, concentrating more on the distance you travel, rather than the speed. As your fitness improves, your speed and your distance can be increased. So what determines the number of calories burned walking? To calculate the number of calories burned walking, you need to consider your weight, the speed you are walking, and the number of miles you walk. If you are travelling at 2.5 mph and you weigh 180 pounds and you walk 1 mile, then you have burned 98 calories. On the other hand, if you weigh 220 pounds and you’re traveling at 2 mph, then you will burn approximately 125 calories per mile. If you walk faster, you will burn more calories. Also, the faster you walk, the more you swing your arms, and the bigger strides you take, which helps to burn additional calories. If you want to restrict your calorie intake to lose weight, it is important you don’t reduce your calorie intake by too much. Whatever you do, don’t make the same mistake many do, and make your body think it’s being starved to death. Why “starving” yourself doesn’t work When your body senses that it is being starved, it goes into “starvation mode”. The next time you eat, your body will automatically store a large proportion of your meal as fat, so that it has an energy store to draw from later. You have just given your body a lesson in how to store extra fat! These typical yo-yo dieters are everywhere! The number of calories burned walking is easy to calculate as you now know, so once you have determined how many calories you would like to burn, it’s time to get out there and take a walk! |
